It ALL starts w/Lucia- you should get a VAN!!

Month: January 2021 (Page 1 of 2)

Chasing Powder…not exactly roughing it :)

Thanks to Pete and Marilee I was able to chase powder and stay at the Stein Ericksen lodge in deer valley… if I keep this up i will be black listed from any #vanlife sites 🙂

Don’t think they see to many sprinter campers at the “Stein” — the valet guys loved it .. “just park it in front”, “hey are those Goodrich tires –what size” 🙂

Spending time with Pete and Marilee + Powder day…talk about fortunate!

So long breck…

Been an awesome two weeks with great friends and family…

Kristian this AM..catching early sun hiking up baldy. Priceless…

Next off to Deer Valley to wear some slippers with my bro! and then WA — Crystal and Alpental to spend time with my fellow 14 Fighter Squadron Samurai brother…Heywood Zablocki. Has it been 20+ years Heywood?

Alpental Ski Area — looks awesome. Hope to get some touring in as well (thanks Heywood!)

Wolfpack…no doubt!

Erik Bell helping momma hike up to top of horseshoe bowl at Breck for fresh tracks. No T-bar running …but that is what made this run so special. Earning turns always feels good. In bounds or out.

Great “First Evers” for Alexis (first time boarding “high alpine terrain”) and Kayte..first time skiing! Part of being in the Bell Pack 🙂 (skiing or riding that is!)

Family

Been a year since the Bells have all been together…and what a year that was. So special being together…yesterday Lucia (Matriarch) led all of us. Erik (24) and Alexis, Kristian (23) and Kayte, and Sonja (16) through the foothills around Breckenridge… what a great day!

I have been thinking a bit about the book “Into the Wild” (Jon Krakaur) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Into_the_Wild_(book) The story of  Chris McCandless (Alexander Supertramp) who walked into the bush of Alaska where he lived for 100+ days. He was searching for meaning…and in the end he found it through all of his searching..it was love and relationships. Unfortunately Chris was not able to make it out of the bush — the flooding of the Teklanika river prevented his return to society. I think Chris would have loved our hike yesterday…

Hiking / Snowshoeing on a ski trip?…

Well the snow in Breck is certainly “low tide” but it is awesome how less than optimal conditions and time (for me — very thankful) has driven the bells to explore the mountains, vistas and awesome beauty of Breckenridge and the blue river valley. Next time you visit Breck perhaps take a day to get on the snowshoes and pick one of the many winter trails…

Here was another hike — had some awesome (and beautiful) company (Lucia and our friend Amy) along with my buddy Chris. Trailhead was 5 min from our house…

Weather…

Do you know there is a NOAA buoy in Hawaii that predicts the weather in the Rocky Mountains (specifically) the weather in the Wasatch Mountains near Salt Lake.

The buoy “pops” when low pressure creates large waves…and this has high correlation to snow in the intermountain west.

Check it out http://powderbuoy.com/ or via Instagram @powderbuoy

My next leg of trip — will be weather dependent. Looking a snowpack and forecast in the Western US

Snow depth in Rocky Mountain West (been a tough year for Colorado and UT).
But long range forecast is promising. Multiple storms piling up. And the powderbuoy is popping!

Friends Ski Time!

Spending a two week block staying with my brother Steve and his son Michael in a beautiful house in Breck. First week with our great friends the Burgs and 2nd with Kristian, Erik (as well as Alexis and Kayte).

So proud of Sonja…online class takes tremendous commitment but has its benefits!

AIARE day 2

Great discussions and experiences looking at how snow can fail and trigger avalanches.

Nice work on route finding and assessing the risks on skiing a specific run

Our ski group (team viper:) and a gathering of beautiful Elk in Rocky Mountain national park.
